Woman in India burns her rapist alive

Rapist burned alive by his victim

A 25-year-old woman in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is being called a hero by some after she set her rapist on fire.

According to the Times of India, the woman whose identity has not been released, lured her attacker, 38-year-old Raju Vishvakarma, to her home to negotiate an out-of-court settlement in the rape case pending against him. Vishvakarma was arrested in April for raping the woman at knife-point, but was out on bail.

The rapist, who later died from his injuries, told authorities when he arrived at her home the woman and her brothers doused him in kerosene and set him on fire. Vishvakarma had burns on over 90 percent of his body.

The rape victim and her family members have been booked on murder charges.

Readers of the Times of India’s report said that the woman should be “given a medal” and said she “did nothing wrong.”

“Hope every bail out culprit will suffer this kind of treatment from the victim,” commented one reader.

Woman’s boyfriend smears feces on her during an argument

The saying that all is fare in love and war shouldn’t be taken literally. Jacob E. Kuhn took things a bit too far during a love spat with his girlfriend.

According to ABC News, Kuhn, 32, got into an argument with his girlfriend after drinking in his Brooksville, Fla. apartment. The argument escalated and Kuhn’s girlfriend attempted leave before things got out of hand. But when she turned around, Kuhn grabbed a clunk of his own feces and smeared it on his girlfriend’s back.

Kuhn left the apartment and his girlfriend called the police. Once Kuhn returned, the police arrested him and he was charged with domestic battery.

Kuhn remains in jail without bond.

Black woman and her white husband beaten by white men in a vicious hate crime

Billie James-Vogel and her husband Jacob James-Vogel were beaten by several white men who did not agree with them being an interracial couple. According to NBCNewYork, Bille and Jacob and their gay friend were leaving a bar in Queens, N.Y. when they were approached by several males.

The men began yelling the ‘N-word’ and the ‘F-word’ at the couple and their friend. Jacob attempted to reason with the men, but it only made them more belligerent. They pushed Jacob to the ground and punched him repeatedly. They also assaulted Billie, leaving her with broken toes and severe bruises.

After the attack, the couple, battered and bleeding, returned to get help from the bar. However, the doorman at the bar slammed the door in their face and would not let them into the club or seek help.

Police officers were able to arrest apprehend and arrest Nikolaos Katsos, 28, but the other assailants escaped. Katsos was charged with assault and harassment, but the charges could be elevated to a hate crime.

Indonesian elite soldiers jailed over prison murders

YOGYAKARTA: An Indonesian military tribunal Thursday jailed eight special forces soldiers for involvement in a plot to storm a prison and shoot dead four inmates in a revenge killing.

The group – three ringleaders and five men who played lesser roles – broke into Cebongan prison near Yogyakarta on the main island of Java in March.

One of the ringleaders was found guilty of firing the shots that killed the prisoners, who were in custody accused of murdering the soldiers’ superior officer in a nightclub brawl.

The murders sparked a public outcry and evoked dark memories of the three-decade dictatorship of Suharto who stepped down in 1998, when the army often acted with impunity.

But the case also exposed deep divisions in the young democracy, with some supporting the soldiers for acting decisively against criminals, saying it was a stark contrast to the weak civilian courts and police.

As the members of the Kopassus unit, notorious during Suharto’s rule for human rights abuses, waited to learn their fate, scores of supporters in paramilitary uniforms rallied outside the court in Yogyakarta.

A three-judge panel found the men guilty and handed down prison sentences on Thursday.

“The defendants’ actions cost the life of four people, caused grief to the victims’ families and traumatised many people, including the prisoners,” chief judge Lieutenant Colonel Joko Sasmito told the court.

Second Sergeant Ucok Tigor Simbolon was found guilty of firing the shots that killed the prisoners, and received the heaviest sentence of 11 years. Prosecutors had recommended 12 years.

Second Sergeant Sugeng Sumaryanto was jailed for eight years, while First Corporal Kodik was given a six-year sentence. The two had stood next to Simbolon as he killed the prisoners.

The trio, who were the leaders of the plot, were also discharged from the army. Their lawyers immediately announced they would appeal the sentences.

The five others were found guilty of storming the prison complex with the trio and assisting the crime by such measures as destroying CCTV footage inside the jail.

The five, who were tried separately to the ringleaders, were each sentenced to one year and nine months in jail.

Another four men, accused of minor roles in the plot such as failing to report it to superiors, are due to be sentenced Friday.

Saudi beheads two murderers

RIYADH: Saudi authorities beheaded two citizens in Riyadh today after they were convicted of separate murders, the interior ministry announced. 

Hashan al-Nutayfat shot dead fellow citizen Mohammed al-Dosari in a dispute, said the statement published by the official SPA news agency.

Another murderer, Mohammed al-Qahtani, was executed after he stabbed a fellow Saudi to death, SPA reported.

The beheadings bring to 65 the number of people executed in Saudi Arabia so far this year, according to an AFP count.

In 2012, the conservative Muslim kingdom carried out 76 executions, according to a tally based on official figures. Human Rights Watch has put the number at 69.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under the oil-rich Gulf state’s strict version of sharia, or Islamic law. - AFP

Egypt interior minister survives assassination bid

CAIRO: Egyptian Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim survived an assassination attempt when a car bomb today ripped through his convoy in a Cairo street, security officials told AFP.

The explosion, the first such attack in Cairo in years, took place at around 10:30 am (0830 GMT) near Ibrahim’s home in the Nasr City area, they said, adding the vehicle was parked in the street.

“The minister survived the assassination attempt,” one security official said.

State news agency MENA quoting an interior ministry source reported that an unknown number of civilians were wounded and some shops damaged in the blast.

The bombing comes amid a violent crackdown since last month on supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by interior ministry police.

Hundreds of people were killed in Cairo’s Rabaa al-Adawiya and Nahda squares on August 14 when police stormed protest camps set up by Morsi’s supporters.

Morsi was ousted by the military on July 3 following popular street protests against his one year rule.
